What a good dog!

I had the pleasure of looking after Wyatt this weekend and I cannot believe what a great dog he is!!! This dog was petrified and spooky just under two weeks ago. Now- he is happy, confident and calm. He was a perfect gentleman in my house- and is a great footwarmer. Wyatt LOVES to snuggle and would happily lay on your lap all day if you let him. I kept telling him he was a bit too large to pass as a Shih Tzu!

Wyatt has learned how to sit for a cookie, and I started teaching him how to shake a paw. He is a very quick learner and really wants to make you happy. I brought him to the Dog Park at the daycare on Saturday and he did great with everyone! He was visiting, jumping on people and just being a happy guy! It was really nice to see.

Wyatt really needs a family to call his own- he is the type of dog who attaches himself really quickly so I'd like to see him in a home very soon. He is crate trained, is good when left alone, loves other dogs, is great with cats and loves to snuggle! What more could you want???!

Dear Foster Mom:

Dear Foster Mom
Author Unknown

There I sat, alone and afraid,
You got a call and came right to my aid.
You bundled me up with blankets and love,
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.
I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold,
That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.
You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend,
You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.
And just when I thought you'd done all you do,
There came along not one new lesson, but two.
First you said, "Sweetheart, you're ready to go,
I've done all I can, and you've learned all I know."
Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss,
Along came a new family, they even have kids!

They took me to their home, forever to stay,
At first I thought you sent me away.
Then that second lesson became perfectly clear,
No matter how far, you will always be near.

And so, Foster Mom, you know I've moved on,
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.
But I'll never forget what I learned that first day,
You never really give your fosters away.

You gave me these thoughts to remember you by,
We may never meet again, and now I know why.
You'll remember I lived with you for a time,
I may not be yours, but you'll always be mine.
--------------------------------
We are so grateful to our foster homes- without you we wouldn't
have anywhere for our dogs to go.
So thank you- for opening your homes, and your hearts to our dogs.

Three legs are better than four!

Ruthie is doing AWESOME!!! She had her front leg amputated on Friday and already is pretty much back to her normal cheerful self! She is still supposed to be taking it easy but it is pretty hard to deny Ruthie toys! Now that the leg is gone her mobility will be even better as the leg isn't going to get in the way and be tripped on.
Three legged dogs do amazingly well and in Ruthie's case she hadn't been using that leg for a long time so she has had no problems adjusting! Now what we need is for someone to open up their home and their heart for her! Ruthie is officially available for adoption!
Thanks to all of the people who donated to help cover the cost of Ruthie's surgery!
For more information about three legged dogs I found this great site!
It talks about bone cancer aswell but has lots of great information about three legged dogs.

An Eastern Beauty

This is Sierra- she is by far one of the most gorgeous dogs we have had in rescue. She came from Ontario where she was labeled as a Pit Bull cross and scheduled for euthanasia. She is a gem and is a great little puppy. Sierra is a typical puppy- she is learning house manners, what she's allowed to chew, and what she's not. She is also started on crate training and leash manners.
Sierra is a nice blend of confidence and sensitivity. She isn't an in your face kind of a dog but not a wall flower either. We are guessing her to be mostly Lab type as she doesn't appear or have many bully breed traits. We predict she will be a medium to large sized dog when she is full grown.

Otto

Otto was so named because of his ears...kind of airplane like :o)
Otto Lilienthal invented the first successful manned gliders and established the concept of the airman — a skilled pilot who controlled his aircraft and carefully balanced it while in the air.
The name fits him somehow ;o)
He is 4 months old and is an All Canadian Mutt. He's got a little bit of everything in him- some shepherd, some lab and a little bit of Great Pyrenees. Whatever he is he is pretty sweet.
Otto loves to be close to you and is very affectionate. He is a little shy when you first meet him but warms up quickly. Otto hasn't had a lot of socialising so is a little overwhelmed by other dogs at first- but is going to a foster home with another dog so will get over that rather quickly. We will have more information on Otto after we've had him a little while.

Wyatt

Meet Wyatt, isn't he handsome?

Wyatt is an Australian Shepherd cross. He is just over one year old and is very, very sweet. He has had a pretty rough life and has lived in a kennel for 2 months. He has never been walked on leash- and is seriously lacking in the socialisation department.

He spent his first night at his foster home last night and did really well. He has decided that Sandy is trustworthy and gave her a big kiss and wag this morning. Wyatt appears to be very good with other dogs- he is enjoying having flirty Mira as a foster sister ;o)

With love, patience and time I think that this dog will be an OUTSTANDING companion. He is gentle, calm and will be completely devoted to his owner. Right now he is a bit shell shocked and learning how to live in a house, travel in a car, and go for walks.

Wyatt has been vaccinated and will be neutered later this week.

Ruthie in the Snow

Ruthie had a great time playing in the snow today.

She has come to the daycare a few times and is a great player- she loves the other dogs and has a great time. We still haven't booked the date for her surgery- but we'll keep you guys posted!

Short and Sweet

Short and Sweet- that's Lacey in a nutshell. She has got to be one of the cutest pups we've had. Lacey is one of the auction puppies- she and her brother Reebok are the only ones left from that litter. They are about 4 months old now and clearly are going to be small breed dogs.
Lacey is a cuddler and loves to hang out with you. She is very sweet and affectionate with people. She is no longer afraid of strangers and happily runs up to everyone. She is a very happy little puppy. Lacey is crate trained and sleeps through the night with no problems. She is understanding housetraining aswell but there are still occasional accidents. Lacey loves other dogs and can be pretty feisty when playing. She enjoys playing with toys and likes to gather them all together. Lacey would make a great Second dog as she really does like the companionship of the other dog. She has been around cats and is learning that not all cats are as nice as the daycare cat. photo courtesy of Liz Saunders

NEW PICTURE COMING SOON!

Reebok is almost as cute as his sister- but has that cocky attitude that is pretty funny in such a small dog! He is a real go-getter and has really come out of his shell. He is a friendly little guy who likes to he cuddled- but of course on his own terms. Reebok LOVES toys and will do anything and everything to get one. He is a great little tugger and will play fetch for as long as you will throw it. I think he has great potential for agility or rally as he really likes to work and do stuff. He is quick as whip and catches on really quickly. Reebok is crate trained, and is almost housetrained aswell.

FAQ'S about Fostering

What's the process?
The process is very similar to adoption. There is an application that has to be filled out, followed by a phone interview. We want to ensure that your home and lifestyle is suited to a dog. Even though fostering is temporary dog ownership it is still important that you have the time, and energy to commit.

The application form asks what types of dogs you'd be willing to foster- as we want to match up the right foster family to the right dog.
Before the dog is placed in your home he is vaccinated and vet checked. We will however ask that you take the dog to the Vet on the day of their scheduled spay/neuter surgery. He will need to be picked up after and then recieve a few days of little activity so he can recover.

What do we have to do with the dog?
Treat the dog just like your own! Love him, teach him manners, house rules and how to be a good dog! Lots of the dogs we get have either minor or major issues- from simple housetraining issues, to seperation anxiety; it will be your job to help him through his problems. We are here to offer advice aswell. Dogs need exercise and you will need to walk your foster dog at least once a day- without an outlet for his energy you will have your hands very full!
Do we have to pay for anything?
We supply the food while you are fostering and the dog will have a collar on with our information in case he gets lost. We ask that you provide treats, toys and chewies. We will send along a crate while you have the dog aswell. There is a local doggie daycare that allows us to have our rescue dogs at the daycare free of charge.

How long do we have him for?
We ask that you commit for at least two weeks- sometimes it will go longer though. We try not to keep a dog in the system for more than 5 weeks.

Do we have a say in who adopts him?
Yes- quite often the potential adopter will meet the dog for the first time while it is in your care.

Don't you get attached?
This is the number one reason why a lot of caring people do not offer their homes for foster care: they are afraid giving the dog up will hurt too much. However, it's a hard truth, but without enough foster homes, we cannot rescue and save these dogs. It helps to think of your foster dog as your friend's dog that you are keeping during a vacation. Sure, you like him and will take really good care of him, but when your friend gets home, you will give the dog back! This is a dog who ultimately belongs to someone else, who is in our care for only a short time. When you give him or her up, it will be to a 'forever home' that this dog has been waiting for--and you will be opening a space for the next rescue who needs you so desperately. There is ALWAYS another rescue dog.

Can we adopt him?
Yes! Of Course!

x-ray vision

This is Ruthie's xrays from earlier this week. Before we had the x-rays done we had thought she was hit by a car, or something like that. But no- see the bright pieces. Those are bullet fragments. Nice Eh?

We are taking Ruthie to a specialist in Calgary to have her leg amputated from the elbow down. Despite the appearance of a damaged shoulder it is not too bad at all so once the leg is gone Ruthie will be more comfortable. She is not in any pain anymore- but the leg is a hinderance- it gets in her way and she sometimes trips over it.

Ruthie has made an amazing turn around in the last month or so- she is outgoing, playful and likes people. It amazes me that dogs are so forgiving.

A star is born...

This cute video is from the daycare- but has our own Rescue Dogs as stars so I thought I'd post it here. Ruthie is the lab x at the beginning of the movie (walking on three legs) and little Lacey is the main player. She is one of the Pug X pups that were found in a box.

Speechless

Okay- so I never read the herald- it is mostly not really relevant news- I guess I should have picked up the paper this morning. http://www.lethbridgeherald.com/article_9378.php

Animal shelter forced to euthanize dogs
By DAVE MABELLJan 8, 2008, 03:58

Disease at the city’s animal shelter led to the destruction of a number of dogs over the holiday period — including one puppy that had already been adopted. Now that pet’s would-be owners are asking why Lethbridge doesn’t save the grief by vaccinating all cats and dogs when they arrive at the city-owned shelter. At city hall, however, officials say it’s not quite that easy. The puppies and dogs were reportedly put down on Dec. 31, following an outbreak of the parvovirus. Their deaths followed the destruction of 55 kittens or cats earlier in the fall, after feline distemper was discovered at the shelter.Christy Hadford, who’d already paid for the pet and signed its adoption papers, says the city should isolate and vaccinate pets when they’re taken to the shelter — “instead of wiping out entire populations of cats and dogs.”“The vaccinations are cheap and the cost can be tacked onto the adoption fee,” she points out. “It wouldn’t cost the city anything.”Hadford says she and her husband visited the shelter just before Christmas, as part of their search for “the perfect dog” to replace one who’d died a few years back. “Our friends had suggested the city shelter as they had just adopted a beautiful dog there and knew his sisters were still at the shelter,” she explains. “My husband and I went and fell in love with the sweetest three-month-old shepherd/malemute cross.”Shelter staff told her the pup could remain there a few more days — once it had been paid for — while the adopting couple spent Christmas out of town. “My husband asked them about parvo, for the sake of the puppies, but the individual at the shelter said, ‘We don’t have to worry about parvo here.’”Satisfied that the staff knew best, Hadford said she left the pet but planned to take it home Jan. 2.On Dec. 31, however, a shelter staff member called to report their dog — and all the shelter’s puppies — were testing positive for parvo and they were all being euthanized.About 10 pups were destroyed, Hadford says. Shelter officials, contacted Monday, would not say how many pets had been killed. But Dave Henley, regulatory services manager for the city, confirmed the parvo outbreak resulted in a number of animals being put down over the holiday period. While it’s not a respiratory illness, he said, parvo is easily spread if an infected pup or dog contacts another.Shelter visitors can also spread the disease, he adds, if they pet or touch more than one animal. That risk couldn’t be eliminated by vaccination, Henley says, because the protection wouldn’t be immediate — and parvo has a two-week incubation period. It’s a two-step process, he adds, with the first shot costing the city $50 and the second one as much or more.“We have to allocate our resources,” including covering veterinarian services for animals who’ve been hit by vehicles — there’s a fee, whether the animal is treated or destroyed — as well as paying for the shelter’s operation and for bylaw enforcement officers. On the legal front, Henley says the city cannot vaccinate any dog within the first 72 hours, if its owners can be traced through dog tag identification. The shelter’s operating policies, he adds, were revised when the new shelter opened in 2004. They’re similar to those in effect in Calgary’s animal shelters. The city’s dog control bylaw was also revised at that time, Henley says, but a similar bylaw aimed at controlling the city’s cat population was never enacted. © Copyright by Lethbridge Herald.com

I am pretty speechless at the moment. How Sad- when it is so preventable. The shelter here is horrible and they are not willing to change. The city doesn't care, and unfortunately it won't get better. It is truly a horrible day.

Responsibility

I am sure you have all heard about the 4 week old Puppies who were found in an outhouse. I got an email initially from a friend who lives in the Pass who was involved in the rescue. It has now spread to the Tv and Radio news. It is pretty disgusting and is a pretty good example of just how horrible people can be. Unfortunately abandoning or throwing away dogs or litters of puppies aren't all that uncommon. We have had four cases of just that in the past three months. There is no end in sight to this sort of thing I guess it all comes down to education.

They were discussing this on the radio this morning and one of the hosts said something to this effect "you could at least put them in a box and leave them on someone's door" how is that for sending a message to the public. I didn't hear this first had mind you, but a concerned friend called me to vent about it. I am not quite sure if the host was joking or serious but either way he is sending the wrong message...But perhaps that is what he thinks and knows???

Now bear with me here, as I am a bit on the cranky side today....

If you don't spay your dog, who lives out in the yard, or gets loose one day and ends up having puppies- whose responsibility is it???? That's right- yours.

When said puppies are 3 weeks old and start to need actual food- whose responsibility is it to feed them??? That's right- yours

When said puppies are 8 weeks old and need to find new homes- whose responsibility is it to find loving, caring, homes??? That's right- yours

When said puppies are 7 months old and have ended up in a shelter, pregnant themselves, or tied up on a chain starving and cold- whose responsible- that's right- You are.

People need to learn to take responsibility for their actions. Particularily when it comes to pets.

I will post more later when I am less cranky. I have tried to make a point of not venting here, as I don't want to give the wrong impression but this really got to me. I will post later today educating people about HOW they can be more responsible...in the mean time don't get offended.

Buckie- A Happy Ending

This is Buck- he is a past Rescue dog who is now much loved, and very spoiled. His owner sent me this picture a few weeks ago. Buck LOVES his chair....even in the winter she said!
Buck and his littermates were rescued from life as a stray on the reserve as puppies- by a woman who thought she could keep them all. She couldn't find a house to have all of these dogs- there were four I beleive. So she would turn them loose on the reserve and come out once a week to feed them and cuddle with them. Really, I'm not joking. We convinced her to give Buck to us- but she wouldn't give up the others. He was in foster care for THREE MONTHS before being adopted. He is a perfect gentleman and is a really great dog. He has been with his family now for almost a year and is doing great- they wouldn't trade him for the world!

a Big Hug

"I would just like to give a BIG HUG to Natalie,Amanda and all foster parents and wish them all a Happy,Healthy,2008.

I thank you, Figit thanks you ,and 98 other dogs thank you for all your hard work, you are true angels. And yes we'll be there for those fund raisers and for any doggy that needs us again in 2008...HAPPY NEW YEAR"

An excitng 2007 and 2008 to come.

Well, its over!!! With 9 hours to go until the new year, we took in our 99th dog! She's the cutest little thing, check her out below. And, we had one completed adoption and two pending as well.

Amanda and I had a great time in 2007. We would like to thank all of you who fostered, adopted, donated or just said a few kind words on the blog. We do have really stressed out, bad days where I know I'm in tears, and never really having time to think about the good we do, I love coming onto this blog and reading your comments and it feels great to get encouragement and for someone to be giving us a pat on the back. Please keep it up.

We had a great time at the adoption fair and many people are asking for another one! So, yes, we are planning and we are hoping to put on another adoption fair sometime in March. We'd like to start having 3-4 adoption fairs a year. Not sure if it will at the one in March, but we are planning to throw a pet supply garage sale at the same time. We'll be asking for donations and help to pull it off.

This is exciting news: our charity papers on in the works and we are hoping that sometime this new year, we'll be getting charitable status. This is great for those of you wanting to donate but need a receipt. We did get an account set up a few months ago, so cheques can now be made out to Prairie Dog Canine Rescue.

Ruthie is going to have a busy year. We've saved up almost $900.00 for her! She is already booked for her x-rays that will answer alot of questions. As soon as she's finished with that, I start making calls to vets who specialize in orthopedics, explain her and our situation and hopefully find one that will give us a discount for her surgery. Fingers crossed.

Last but not least, we enter this new year with a quick list of dogs that are available:
Tala: Sheltie X, we do have 2 applications in for her.

Tasha
: 5yr female Mini Am. Eskimo
Oreo: 4m. male Pointer X

Reebok & Lace-e
: 8 week Pug X
Elvis: 12 weeks Shep X

Vice
: 7 week Am Bulldog X Boxer
Nikita
: 1y female Coonhound
and Dixie: 12 week Sheltie X. Of course there are also Sofie's pups
which are Golden Ret. X and will be ready to go the beginning of February.

So, in signing off, thank you again for all who, in some way, involved yourself with our rescue efforts and in the lives of 'our' dogs. Without you all Minnie, Kyla, Lexus, Turtle, Sasha, Sparky, Duke, Patches, Shiloh, Baxter, Mickey, Bucky, Quinn, Fred, Taya, Bo, Macy, Rosco, Charlie, Sproket, Lexi, Diva, Koko, Kiki, Jetta, Whiskey, Sammy, Diamond, Copper, Vito, Ferro, Yeti, Kairie, Crazie, Mishka, Archer, Blue, Lexi, Denver, Gracie, Polly, Kela, TimBit, Bridget, Beckham, Spencer, Louie, Link, Pache, Boris, Sofie, Neena, Pepper, Atlas, Jenna, Halo, Reece, Skor, Twix, Turk Henry, Marie, Snickers, Figit, Bosotn, Max, Ruby, Forrest, Rika, Molly, KC, Red, Sweat Pea, Q, Mouse, Brooks, and Birke, would not been able to be helped and in new adoptive homes!!

Thats it, thats all! We need to go and get Neena ready, her new family is picking her up in an hour! Bye Neena.
