The Results are In!

We had a great adoption fair this past Saturday. Lots of people came out to enter the draw for the prizes, ate some hot dogs and hamburgers, and most importantly, adopted some great dogs!

Not only did we have the dogs that were listed on the site, we debuted a few new ones that day too. We had three great little pups, of which, only one made it to the fair as a couple of the foster homes adopted the other two!!

We also debuted Ariel who didn't get adopted, so is still waiting for that great forever home, she is a 1 1/2 year old Heeler mix who is very sweet and learning more everyday about life in the city.

Bruce showed up to the fair so sure that he would have a home that night, but he too, went back to his foster home. He is a wonderfully laid back, well behaved, Rotti X. Bruce is about 5 years old and was found on the west side. A kind hearted lady picked him up, made all the calls that you do when you find a dog, and then they waited for the owners to call...and waited..and waited. No one ever called looking for poor Bruce. His foster family is totally in love with Bruce, he is great with kids, and their three other dogs.

Penny on the other hand, got a great home on Saturday!! We were all very excited to see such a precious girl go to a new home. She was very polite, as usual, while many people met her and talked about her, but she kept getting left. Then, that one special lady came back! for her, she liked her too and had kept watching at the gate, hoping she would come back. Penny's wish for the day came true.

Little Elly made an impression on alot of people, mostly our volunteers!! She is a little Border Collie? X puppy that was found all by herself in Magrath. A nice family has taken her in and asked our help in finding her a special home. Elly isn't very wild, yet!. She does take some time to warm up to you, but she was very brave on Saturday and received many hugs. We think she may have fell out of the back of a truck maybe as her left eye is 'shattered' and she no longer sees out of it. Despite this, she is doing very good at her foster home with house training and thinks her foster sister, a St. Bernard, is her mom!

Speaking of shy, our little Asia went home this weekend! She too was very brave at the adoption fair and had lots of people holding her and giving her hugs. She took it all in stride and it paid off. That special couple met her sparkly gaze and it was over for them! Asia gets a new brother, Charlie, that will help her keep learning how great it is to be owned and loved.

Asia's mom, Maya was at the fair, but decided that she wanted to stay in foster care a little longer! Maya was found on the reserve with Asia but she is much more outgoing. Maya went into the clinic on Thursday for her spay surgery and we were very surprised when the vet tech called to say they had 'found something' in her uterus. They had cut open her uterus as they could see something dark inside, and who would have ever expected that they found a bullet!!! Now, in my head, I pictured a slug, a big bullet, but no, it is a little bullet from a high powered air riffle. Still, whatever sized bullet, she had it in her, from being shot. So, we took an x-ray to see if there were any more, and yes, there is another bullet just beside her spleen. It is undecided if that second bullet needs to come out or not, but either way she will be fixed up. She sure is a survivor, to have been shot twice, healed, had puppies, and still be so happy and willing to give her belly for a belly rub, she is definitely a 'forgive and forget' kinda dog.

Cute little Brie had lots of attention on the weekend, didn't end up going home yet with anyone as we are still going thru applications and making calls to the people that are interested in her.

The boys, Lenny and Finn make good impressions too. Lenny went home with a family with some young girls that once they had seen him, wouldn't give him back! Finn, poor Finn, lots of people looked at him but no takers! Finn is such a wonderful little dog. One thing we over heard a couple of times is that people think that he is old, maybe because of his scruffiness? So, Finn will be going in for a beauty treatment in an attempt to make him look how is personality is!! Finn is just 2 years old, a Bishon X Poodle, non-shedding, white, and oh so cute. Very well behaved, not yappy, just happy!!

So, that is it! We had a few great adoptions, some great additions to the group and we, the four legged ones of the day, went home with sun burns!! What a great day is was, and we'd like to thank all the businesses that donated items for the prized tables, to M&M for supplying the hot dogs and hamburgers, to McLennen Fencing for the fencing, and to you, the public for coming out to meet us, enter the draws, and cuddle the dogs. If you were able to add a dog to your house hold that day, CONGRATS!! from all of us at PDCR.

Reminder: We are getting together at Gyro Park on the first Tuesday in June. Please come out to meet the dogs, old and new.

Adoption Fee Increase

Unfortunately this past month we were hit with an increase in our vetting cost of 35%, this not only affects our rescue groups but others in Alberta also. So after a lot of discussion it has been decided that for us to be able to continue the work that we do we are going to be increasing our adoption fee to $300.00 effective May 15, 2009.

Now while that may seem like a lot of money to adopt a dog we wanted to let everyone know what our adoption fee includes:

- Spay or Neuter of the dog
- Vaccinations including rabies up to date at the time of adoption
- Microchipping with 24 Pet Watch Microchips
- Deworming
- 30 day Pet Insurance Gift Policy

Now if you were to go and purchase a dog from a breeder, pet store or newspaper ad, these items would all be done at your expense by your veterinarian. We contacted a local vet clinic and obtained their pricing for these items (based on a 11 - 20kg dog)

- Spay - $347.85 or Neuter - $253.05
- Vaccinations Including Rabies - $96.60
- Microchip - $65.81

Total for a female dog - $535.77
Total for a male dog - $436.23

Now of course the vet clinics we work with do give us a discount but even taking that into consideration we are still barely covering our operating cost. Then you take into account that many times we have dogs come into our rescue that require additional care for ear infections, broken bones, hernias and parvo to name a few.

This has been a stressful decision as we do try to cover the health of the dogs that come into our system, and this fee increase is needed to continue with the dogs receiving the necessary care and be available for new homes. We would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all of the followers of our blog, your support in all the issues we face is so encouraging.

Full House

This past week has been very busy with intakes in preparation for our upcoming adoption fair. Here is a brief description of some of the dogs we have taken in given to us by their foster parents, you will be able to see photos of them on the right.....

Cosmo (6 year old male Bichon/Shih Tzu Cross)

Cosmo is a great dog he is full of energy and loves to play with other little dogs. He loves to sit on your lap and will follow you everywhere he goes. He is not sure of big dogs but once he gets to know them then hes fine.

Penny (4 year old female Springer Spaniel/Border Collie)

She is a happy dog and is full of energy. She walks nicely on the leash for the kids and loves to cuddle on the couch. She is not overly fond of cats so a cat free home would be best for her.

Lenny (2 year old male Lhasa Apso/Shih Tzu Cross)

Lenny is a good dog. He LOVES kids. He is getting along well with his foster brother. Lenny is an all around nice guy that loves to be with you and the family.

Finn (2 year old male Bichon/Poodle Cross)

Info to come soon

Maya (10 month female old Lab Cross)

She is learning how to walk on the leash. She likes to chew things she shoudn't... shoes hats !! Whenever you come near her she will roll over for a belly rub...loves attention. She does not go well into the crate but we are working on that. Overall she is a great dog.

Asia (10 week old female Lab/Collie Cross, Maya's Pup)

Asia came into us very scared and with little or no human contact. She is now learning that people are ok but is still a shy little girl. With more time, patience and love she will turn out to be a wonderful dog. She is working on house and kennel training.

Tessa

Meet Tessa......

She is a 10 month old Jack Russel Terrier/Boston Terrier Cross...

Here is what her foster mom has to say about her....
Tessa is so very sweet, she is a great mix of puppy and maturity, definitely still playful but can relax as well. She likes to come for a quick snuggle or kiss and then she's off investigating again. Tessa also likes to follow me around the house, but is not pushy and tries to stay out of my way. She is pretty interested in my cats, but I think she just wants to play, after all they are her size! On a walk she gets a little excited at first, but soon settles in beside you, she gets quite mad when the leash gets tangled up in her feet...its really pretty cute. Tessa is very smart and would catch on to training quickly, she has only had one accident and I'm going to take responsibility :)

Tessa is great with other dogs and LOOOOVVVVEEEES to play and give them kisses. Would you have room in your home for Tessa????

Who Knew?!

Well, how suprising was that!!!

We thought up the idea of a monthly dog walk to help the members of the group to get to know the dogs in our system. Sometimes we take in a dog and no one but the foster home ever gets a chance to interact with it. Then, we thought why not invite the public to come and meet us and the dogs too.

What a fun time it was. We started off the evening with all the dogs being 'available', but by the end of the hour, and after meeting 30 or so people that showed up, we are happy to announce that Colby, Teka and Zak met their forever homes tonight. Teka had a first meeting a few days ago, but seeing her again at the park tonight sealed the deal. Colby is looking forward to a great new home on Friday and gentle little Zak went home with a family friend of mine!! (I get to babysit him, so I'm happy).

Frodo has about three different people stop by to meet, shake a paw, and rub his belly. Hope he made a good impression!

Brie, the Jack Russell was a typical snippy Terrier, but did really well. New pup Tessa, was wild and so totally involved with licking all the other dogs! She is a Boston Terrier X Jack Russell. One of the visitors just had to call her friend that is looking to add a little dog to her household, she came over right away to meet Tessa, hopefully she'll have new home this weekend.

Edie was there, but didn't see much happening with her. She is so sweet and its amazing how active she is. Her ears are something you must see to truly appreciate!

Thanks so much to everyone that turned out this evening. The wind was absolutely horrible, but it was totally worth it. Thanks to Bonney's family for stopping by for a visit. Bonney looks so happy, it was great to see. Think she needs a sister! And, you would have thought that someone would have brought a camera, but no! We have no proof of how much fun this was and how cute the dogs were, so you'll have to come out on June 2nd to experience it. Hope to see you then.

Kiss Me Hot Lips....

Do blondes really have more fun?

Well Kelly would say that they sure do! Kelly is approx an 18 month old Golden Retriever. She came to us too skinny to be allowed to compete in the beauty competition until she gained some weight. With some good food, lots of love and attention, she is now the bubbly blonde that she should be. She spends her days perfecting her tan while being fawned over by her two big cabana boys. Every now and again, she forgets that she is a perfect lady and shows the boys who is boss. She loves everyone, even the excitable little boys that she is currently living with. She handles their affections with elegance and grace. She is quiet and demure inside the home as well as out. Of course a real lady would never raise her voice or have a temper. At night she sleeps in her canopied crate and dreams of her big break.

Who wants to crown this beauty queen?
