Say Cheese....

This handsome goof ball is Ozzy, a one and a half year old male golden retriever.

He is sweet, loveable guy who is patiently awaiting a new home of his home. He is very smart, loves to play WWF style with his foster sister, housetrained and is all around a great guy to have around. He is your typical golden retriever with lots of energy so would do well in an active household so he can have lots of runs, swims in the river and play time with another dog his size.

Flower Power!

We took in these sweet little girls from the spay/neuter clinic two weeks ago. Their mom was one of the dogs brought in for a spay, and the owner didn't want the pups back. So, they went off to a great foster home just outside of Calgary with a little puppy yard where they could relax and get healthy. The foster mom,Julie, is very proud of her little girls and sends me tonnes of pictures almost every day! Thanks Julie, they are so cute.

POPPY

IRIS ADOPTED!!

ROSE

DAISY

The girls are said to be super playful, cuddly and attentive. They are getting along great with their foster sister, a Golden. They are paper trained and are getting the hang of going outside to do 'business', not just play. The girl's are all just under 5 pounds right now, they are 9 weeks old. Their mom was a very petite small medium sized dog, about 35 pounds, dad is unknown. We think that the pups will be very petite and small. In comparison, Reese, the little Chocolate puppy, she is only about 7 weeks and already weighed 10.5 pounds! These girls are tiny. When we first got them, they were smaller then most adult Chihuahuas that I know. They will be joining us here in Lethbridge in the next week or so, but we accepting applications now.

Another Avenue of Rescue...

Last weekend I had the priviledge of being asked to help with the Alberta Spay/Neuter Task Force's Animal Wellness Clinic. In short, what they do is arrange with the government and the First Nation Tribes to go out and, for free, spay and/or neuter as many dogs in a weekend as they can.

So, on Friday, I was part of a 8 vehicle convoy that met out in Standoff and we went door to door to sign people up for the clinic, load the dogs, and transport them to the vet clinic in Cardston.

After walking, numbering and arranging the dogs into order for surgery, we bedded them down and headed home.

Saturday, we had SNOW, yes, snow. The closer Bobbi and I got to Cardston, the more snow we saw! The clinic was buzzing dispite the weather.

It was 8am and surgeries were about to start. I had been asked to help with recovery. My job was to get the dogs after the surgery, make sure they could breath and that they were warming up, wake them up, and move them back into their crates when they were ready. This proved to be a very physically demanding and stressful. We were borrowing the clinic, and doing a quantity of dogs that the building had never seen before. Usually, in a standard spay/neuter surgery, the dogs are placed back in kennels and a person will sit with that ONE dog and wake it up. The dogs in my 'ward' came out in threes and fours at a time sometimes, all still tubed (tracheal tubes for breathing during the surgery) and my 'ward' was located on the floor of the hallway in the clinic!

That first day, we think the count of spayed/neutered dogs reached 60 before we were all too tired to go on. I rolled back into Lethbridge around 9pm, ate supper, hit the shower and into bed.

Sunday was another 'great' weather day, feel the sarcasim?! Fog, everywhere, right in front of the vehicle and I couldn't see a thing. For the first half of the trip out to Cardston, I could only go 65 km/hr.

Sunday, we were all tired from the past two days, but the surgeries got underway and we were done by 2:30 in the afternoon. The final number of dogs and cats that were spay/neutered reached 104!! An additional 52 dogs were vaccinated and dewormed (this was if the owners of the dogs didn't want them spayed/neutered, or if they were under 4 months of age), and there were 66 dogs and cats that went into rescue groups by the end of Sunday. In total: we dealt with 222 dogs and cats in just over 60 hours! There were 46 volunteers, the picture is only of the last few that remained standing at the end! And, there were 12 rescue groups involved in taking the 66 dogs and cats that were surrendered. We, at PDCR, got Reese, Skip and the four little Flower Pups.

End picture: I saw these dogs hunting for gophers and thought it looked so cute. The white dog had her butt up in the air too, and of course moved down just as I was taking the picture. Notice the dog on the left, he is about 2 or 3 feet into the ground, only his butt up in the air.

We have had some great additions to our "Mature Dogs' category and a few of them have gotten really great homes in the last couple of days. Here are the ones still in need of forever homes.

BRIE

Yes, Brie is still with us! She is a wonderful Jack Russell. She is house and crate trained. She loves to play hard with her Weimeraner foster sister and plays a bit nicer with the little Cavalier foster sister. She likes to watch the kitties and given the chance, will try to get them to run, but with a little quick correction, she does back off easily. She is a typical JRT is that she is active, she loves to play tug-of-war and when she does, she sounds like a huge dog with all the play growling she does. She also loves to just hang out watch the world outside the windows.

BRIE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!

ARIEL
This little red dog came to us from another rescue group that found her on a reserve near Calgary. She was found with a litter of puppies and Ariel was very unsocialized. She was a good mom and soon saw her pups off to their new homes. She waited and waited for a great family to come along and think she was cute too, but none came for months and months. So, she came to join PDCR in hopes that someone in our area will consider her for their own. She is sometime still shy of new people, but if she knows you, she will wriggle and scream in excitement! She is such a character. She is thought to be a Heeler X based on her color, little pricked ears, and freckled legs. She is about 40 pounds, a great size. She is house and crate trained and loves to run and will hang out in the yard or in the house happily with you.

HELIX

This handsome Golden is new, as in yesterday! He was found out in the country near Vauxhall. The farm family that found him was OK with him staying until the neighbor's little dogs kept going into heat and they didn't want him to be the daddy of their puppies, so thought that by shooting at him, that would keep him away! He dodged the bullet many times, and finally, concerned for his life, the family turned him into our program to hopefully find a home free of fire arms! He is an adult Golden, a beautiful light gold color and typical Golden personality, super happy to meet anyone! He is good in his crate and is really hoping to find a new home soon.

MAYA

She is such a deserving dog. She was found on the reserve by Lethbridge with her puppy Asia. Maya is a very outgoing lovable girl. She a good with other dogs and cats. Her foster family set up a pool in their backyard a little while ago and Maya thinks is the most wonderful thing ever. She will jump up and into the pool, swim a few laps and then hop out to dry in the sun. She is an active dog, but does just fine with a walk during the day, and a good game of fetch in the evening, the occasional dip in the pool helps work off those puppy pounds! She too is house and crate trained and loves to cuddle. She is a medium sized dog and weighs about 45 pounds.

All My Puppies

We have had quite a few puppies come in recently and get adopted so quickly that they didn't even get a chance to debut on the site! This is very good, we are not complaining, but we did slack off in posting as we were so busy doing adoptions. We have returned with a vengence! and promise to catch up on all the Newbies to PDCR.

The puppies are first:

LACEY
This little cutie is supposedly a cross between a Boxer and a St. Bernard! We don't have any confirmation on this as she was an auction item at the recent 'Odd and Unusual' Auction. Although her cross is Unusual, we don't think there is any reason for such a cute little thing to be called Odd, or be auctioned off.

Her foster home is very impressed with this little girl. She is proving herself to be very smart as she hasn't had a single accident in the house! She whines and lets the household know that she has to go out. She is getting along great with her foster brothers and sisters, these are of the canine and feline species as well as the two legged, young and old. Lacey is very sweet and cuddly, but likes to do her own thing too.

REESE

Is the color of the outside of the Peanut Butter Cup, her fur is a dark chocolatey color, long and a bit of a wave in it! She is so cute and fiesty. She was found on the local reserve area and because she didn't 'match' the rest of her litter, the owner didn't want her to 'cheapen' the rest of the litter! He plans on selling the rest of the pups. So, in comes little Miss Reese. She is about 7 or 8 weeks old, paper trained and getting used to the noises of a busy household. She loves to chase the kids and chew on fingers. She is short and pudgy right now, but will probably end up a nice medium sized dog.

SKIP

My heart dropped the day I met this beautiful little soul.

We were out on the reserve last weekend and I saw a girl kicking, literally, a puppy out of her house. I scooped him up and felt nothing but bones, literally! Little Skip here only outweighs Reese by 4 pounds. He is a real bag of bones. I got the 'owner' to sign him over to our care and brought him home. The first couple of days I was really scared for him, but as with all reserve dogs, he is a fighter. But, he is also such a lover, he prances when he sees me coming toward him and gets all wiggly. I haven't heard him utter one noise at all. He is very content with life now, he gets fed many times a day, something that he obviuosly didn't get before. He is slowly gaining weight, strength and courage. I thought he was only a few months old, but upon his vet check, we were told he was about 8 months old although his body is somewhat stunted and immature physically because of the lack of nurishment during those crucial growing months. There is no long-term effects of this. He is thought to be a Sheltie cross and he is currently 14 pounds.
**We went for a check up today and found that about 90% of Skip's tongue has an acidic burn on it! The poor little guy, we had noticed that he was having a hard time drinking and he seemed to not want to eat all day today. So, he is on antibiotics for the infection that is raging in his mouth. It is very painful for him and it will be a rough couple of days now til the infection clears and the tongue starts to heal again. We will be taking applications for Skip during his treatment, but probably won't be letting him go home for about a week**
Skip is doing much better, he did 'crash' and spent a day in the hands of Dr. Kendra. During his stay in the clinic, the vet 'recongized him as a poosible brother of one of her client's dog!! So, we met up and they are a great match and that little girl dog even had the burns inside her mouth. We are so sure they are from the same litter!! Anyway, they wanted a playmate for little Autumn, so Skip gets to go home this Sunday

THE FLOWERS

We also took in a litter of four precious little girl puppies this weekend, also found on the reserve. The are absolutely adorable as you can see.

The mom dog is a small medium sized mix breed, she was very sweet. The pups are about 7 weeks old and much smaller then the picture makes them look. They are about the size of Chihuahuas right now, so we are expecting them to be small medium sized dogs when they are mature, about 35-40 pounds. We are naming them after flowers and a seperate post of them with thier new names will be posted soon. They are currently being fostered in Calgary, thanks Julie!, and will be available for adoption in about a week. They too need some TLC before we move them into new homes.

GAUGE

This handsome boy is Gauge. He was one of four pups that joined our group just a little while ago. He is very loved by his foster mommy who is having a really hard time letting him go! He is the perfect gentleman according to Tammy. He is very well mannered, listens, asks for cuddles every night and a pro at the doggy door. His cross is as unusual as the rest of the pups in our system right now: his mom was a cross between a PitBull and a Jack Russell Terrier and his dad was a Boxer! He is going to be so handsome and stout by the looks of it. Guage is about 3 months old now and so ready for a home of his own.

New posts of the older and more mature dogs will be added soon, stay tuned!

Momma Maya

Here we go again. My my, how could I resist you?

Maya is a recent addition that made her debut a couple of weeks ago at the Adoption Fair. She was feeling a bit delicate that day due to her surgery two days previous. When working with rescue dogs, one would think you have seen and heard it all. You're probably right, we likely have. It doesn't make it easier to find out after Maya's surgery that two bullets had been shot into her tiny body. One was found in her uterus, another lodged close to her spleen. What a brave and tough dog to go through the birthing process with that bullet stuck there. Dogs are so forgiving and forget so easily. Watching her play and be very silly last night at the Dog Walk is heartwarming and inspiring. She's ready to go home and deserves nothing but the best. She is doing well at house training and loves to be in her crate. We think that Maya is approximatley a year old and is a lab cross.

Momma Maya, now I really know.... My My, I could never let you go.

Bruce Almighty

This gentle giant is Bruce....

He was found wandering in west Lethbridge and a kind couple took him in with hopes of helping him find his owners. Bruce patiently awaited the call from his people looking for him, but sadly the call did not come. But lucky for Bruce these nice people were willing to help him find a new home and called us.

Bruce is a 5 year old Lab/Rotti cross, he is truly a gentle giant with a heart of gold. His foster family says he is house trained, loves to hang out in the yard, is good with dogs, cats and kids and would be the perfect addition to any home, in fact if they had the room they would keep him themselves.

Bruce would love for you to come and meet him at Dog Day in the Park on June 2, 2009. He will be patiently waiting for you at Gyro Park (10A Avenue & 16 Street S) from 6:30pm - 7:30pm and looking forward to lots of treats and some cuddles.
