Adoption Fee Increase

Unfortunately this past month we were hit with an increase in our vetting cost of 35%, this not only affects our rescue groups but others in Alberta also. So after a lot of discussion it has been decided that for us to be able to continue the work that we do we are going to be increasing our adoption fee to $300.00 effective May 15, 2009.

Now while that may seem like a lot of money to adopt a dog we wanted to let everyone know what our adoption fee includes:

- Spay or Neuter of the dog
- Vaccinations including rabies up to date at the time of adoption
- Microchipping with 24 Pet Watch Microchips
- Deworming
- 30 day Pet Insurance Gift Policy

Now if you were to go and purchase a dog from a breeder, pet store or newspaper ad, these items would all be done at your expense by your veterinarian. We contacted a local vet clinic and obtained their pricing for these items (based on a 11 - 20kg dog)

- Spay - $347.85 or Neuter - $253.05
- Vaccinations Including Rabies - $96.60
- Microchip - $65.81

Total for a female dog - $535.77
Total for a male dog - $436.23

Now of course the vet clinics we work with do give us a discount but even taking that into consideration we are still barely covering our operating cost. Then you take into account that many times we have dogs come into our rescue that require additional care for ear infections, broken bones, hernias and parvo to name a few.

This has been a stressful decision as we do try to cover the health of the dogs that come into our system, and this fee increase is needed to continue with the dogs receiving the necessary care and be available for new homes. We would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all of the followers of our blog, your support in all the issues we face is so encouraging.
