Dog Day in the Park

We don't mind the drizzle!
We are still going to be at the
Park tonight.
Bring your umbrellas.

This is an exciting evening that we invite all our readers to attend. We meet at Gyro Park, on the corner of 10A Ave and 16th Street South. This Tuesday, Aug 4th, come out to meet: Ariel, Sunny, Reese, Scooter, Taffy, Jessi, Sasha, Snap, Ashley, and Doc. They are all great dogs that would love the extra attention. Don't worry if you aren't interested in adopting, maybe the dogs could interest you in a little walk around the park, or a quick paw shake, no commitment is needed to make a tail wag!

We do have applications available at the park if you are interested in filling one out. We are also able to accept any donations that you may want to give for the dogs. We always accept blankets, collars, leashes, food, dog beds, grooming supplies, toys, puppy pads, or anything that you'd like to donate.

If you need more information about the evening in the park, please call us at 403-795-2599

Chocolatey Goodness!

Some of you might remember Reese from just a month ago when she was a tiny little, handful of a pup. Well, she is giant compared to then!, but still just as adorable. Reese came to us from the reserve in the beginning of June. She was adopted to a great family, but they had to return her due to unknown dog allergies. They were very upset, but the health of their son had to come first. Reese thought she had the best vacation ever with them, they took such great care of her and taught her how to be a good puppy. Look at her smile!

Do you notice her eyes? The are absolutely amazing! They are a light limey green color and are just stunning, they are all you look at when you meet her.

Reese's mom was, we think, an Australian Shepherd X. She was a reserve dog so its hard to say, but her eyes were also a bright green, she had a dense red and white coat of half fluff, half curls. Mom was a compact little dog, about knee height, maybe 50 pounds soaking wet. All the male dogs in the area where Reese was found were about the same size as the mom dog. So, are are guessing that Reese will be a great wrestling and camping size, great for cuddling, but able to handle herself when the kids decide to ride her! We aren't saying this is a good idea, just that Reese will be a great size and her temperment is wonderful. She is quiet, a little fiesty, but big on cuddles. She loves to play with other dogs and does a belly crawl toward the cats to see if they want to play.

Come meet Reese and all our dogs this Tuesday, Aug. 4th at Gyro Park, on the corner of 10A Ave and 16th Street South. We will be in the park from 6 - 8.

Reese would love if someone came to play ball with her.

Little Trooper

Meet Doc.

He came into our system about three weeks ago and is just making his debut now. He is about 14 weeks old now, a beautifully marked little Shepherd X. Doc was brought to the Park Pet Hospital by a man who found him on the reserve. Due to the injury that Doc was sporting, and the expected bill to come with the treatment, the man surrendered him to the rescue. We didn't know what to do with poor little Doc right off the bat. His left leg, from the 'wrist' bone down to and including the toes were all pointing upwards. His paw had been twisted right around, breaking many bones inside.

So, we were given a few options for his treatment, re-set it and splint it for six weeks, hoping that it will heal in a way that he'll walk. Or, amputate it. We decided to set the leg, splint it and see if he can walk on it properly. The re-setting of the leg happened a week ago today. He was put out for the procedure and awoke with a stiff splint holding his leg straight. After the initial interest in the new thing on his leg, Doc happily forgot about it and looked for someone to play with. He is doing very well with the splint, bouncing up and down the stairs at his foster home, chasing the balls and toys that he has, and playing with his foster sister. Here are some more pictures of Doc.

Doc proves that he isn't going to be held up by anything that happens to him. His foster homes says he is a wonderful little guy, smart, sleeps quietly in his crate all night and is trying so hard to do his business outside on a regular basis! He isn't a crazy wild puppy, this might be because he is used to feeling pain in his leg. But, remember, he is still a puppy and will undoubtedly get into trouble as he matures!

Doc may still need his leg amputated, but in the mean time, we thought we'd show off the little trooper and hopfully line up a great home that will take him four or three legged.

Our Sunshine Girl

This sweet gal is Sunny, a 2 year old yellow lab cross that came to us from Medicine Hat SPCA along with her friend Taffy who you can read about in an earlier post.

Her foster home has nothing but good things to say about her and we all agree that she would make a great family pet. Here is a few other things her foster family has to say....

She loves to play outside when the kids are out there, and if they go out without her she will whine at the front door. She loves kids. She is just a very large teddy bear. She eats well and is coming along great.

Sunny gets along well with cats, dogs and kids. She is full of energy and would make a great hiking or running partner.

Are you ready for a little Sunshine in your life, if so Sunny is your girl.

Scooter's Transformation

Meet Scooter then.....

And now, introducing Prince Charming himself.....Scooter now!!!

Scooter is a male bichon cross and is almost a year old. He came to us along with his sisters, who you will hear more about later, when a caring neighbour called to see if we could help find them homes as their owner passed away.

Scooter was quite shy in his first few days with us, but with love and patience of his great foster home he is doing great! Here is what his foster mom has to say about him....

He's totally coming out of his shell! He does a little bum wiggle dance when I come home and couldn't be happier to hang out and play in the yard. Ok...well he doesn't really play yet, but he tags along behind and watches the action. Oliver has even managed to coax him into a couple (brief) games of chase. He hasn't had one single accident in the house! He's totally crate trained, sleeps happily through the night, and doesn't mind spending time in an x-pen chewing on a bone. At first he wouldn't go through doorways or have anything to do with stairs, but now he bolts through the house and rips up and down the stairs. He's very, very mellow and doesn't seem to need much exercise. I think he would love a calm home to give him kisses and cuddles all day.

So Scooter is awaiting your applications so he can spend his first birthday in his new home!

Sweet like candy

This sweet gal is Taffy, a 2 year old female Lab Cross who came to us from the Medicine Hat SPCA.

Her foster mom has nothing but good things to say about this girl....
Taffy is really a fun dog - she is learning to go on the lead for walks, house-trained, happy to be in her crate for quiet time, friendly with other dogs, loves to play fetch, energetic and playful, and very, very affectionate. She’s a fantastic dog – we love her. Too bad we’re going away on holidays and have a big trip planned for next year, or we’d probably be tempted.

Taffy would love to find a new home in time for summer camping, hiking and lazy days in the back yard working on her tan.

Who could resist this girls charm...

Rose

This sassy little girl is Rose....

She is a collie/shepard cross who is approximately 3 months old. We estimate she will be a medium size dog once all her growing is done.

Her foster mom says she is quite the character and loves playing with the other dogs in the house. They are working hard on her housetraining, crate training and doggie manners to get her ready for hew new home....could that be your home????

Toby

Toby asked me to talk with everyone and see why no one loves him.... I tried to explain that good things come to those who wait but he still does not believe me....

So at his request I will share with you the many great qualities of Toby....

Loves to cuddle, great with other dogs (he said he would really like a playmate in his new home so he does not miss his foster sister too much), perfect size (not too big, not too small), well behaved, good listener & did I mention loves to cuddle.

Toby is a 2 year old terrier cross, he is neutered, microchipped, has all his vaccinations up to date and is ready for his happy ending.

Fostering Anyone???

We currently have a number of dogs waiting to come into the rescue but no place for them to go, (currently there are 8 dogs on the waiting list). Summer is always a hard time as people are away on vacation so it limits our space. We are always looking for new foster homes, so if you have at all thought of fostering here are some facts on foster to help you with your decision....

What's the process?

The process is very similar to adoption. There is an application that has to be filled out, followed by a phone interview. We want to ensure that your home and lifestyle is suited to a dog. Even though fostering is temporary dog ownership it is still important that you have the time, and energy to commit.

The application form asks what types of dogs you'd be willing to foster- as we want to match up the right foster family to the right dog.

Before the dog is placed in your home he is vaccinated and vet checked. We will however ask that you take the dog to the Vet on the day of their scheduled spay/neuter surgery. He will need to be picked up after and then receive a few days of little activity so he/she can recover.

What do we have to do with the dog?

Treat the dog just like your own! Love him, teach him manners, house rules and how to be a good dog! Lots of the dogs we get have either minor or major issues- from simple house training issues, to separation anxiety; it will be your job to help him through his problems. We are here to offer advice as well. Dogs need exercise and you will need to walk your foster dog at least once a day- without an outlet for his energy you will have your hands very full!

Do we have to pay for anything?

We supply the food while you are fostering and the dog will have a collar on with our information in case he gets lost. We ask that you provide treats, toys and chewies. We will send along a crate while you have the dog as well.

How long do we have him for?

We ask that you commit for at least two weeks- sometimes it will go longer though. We try not to keep a dog in the system for more than 5 weeks.

Do we have a say in who adopts him?

Yes- quite often the potential adopter will meet the dog for the first time while it is in your care.

Don't you get attached?

This is the number one reason why a lot of caring people do not offer their homes for foster care: they are afraid giving the dog up will hurt too much. However, it's a hard truth, but without enough foster homes, we cannot rescue and save these dogs. It helps to think of your foster dog as your friend's dog that you are keeping during a vacation. Sure, you like him and will take really good care of him, but when your friend gets home, you will give the dog back! This is a dog who ultimately belongs to someone else, who is in our care for only a short time. When you give him or her up, it will be to a 'forever home' that this dog has been waiting for--and you will be opening a space for the next rescue who needs you so desperately. There is ALWAYS another rescue dog.

Can we adopt our foster dog?

Of Course!!!

So if you are interested in fostering please contact us prairiedogcaninerescue@hotmail.com, your help is greatly appreciated!!!
