Identity Crisis!!!

Poor Zak can't understand why no one wants him. During the past four weeks in foster care, he has worked very hard to perfect the fine art of being a good puppy. He doesn't mess in the house, loves to cuddle and will fall asleep while you watch TV. He loves a good wrestle with the big dogs. He is still super duper cute, but why does no one want him?
So, he has come up with a plan. His foster mommy has some baby lambs at her house and everyone thinks they are so cute. With all the attention going to the lambs, Zak has decided that he stands a better chance at being adopted if he were one of those cute lambs. Here are some pictures of Zak trying to 'blend in'!!!

Please, if you are a good home for Zak and think he deserves a home, get him quick before his first woof is a BAAA!

The Perfect Dog

Frodo has been with us for a week now and this is what his foster mom has to say about him now that he has settled in.

This is the best dog I've ever had. He is so calm and so sweet. Loves to cuddle. Doesn't seem to really know how to play though, I'll throw the ball for him and he just looks at me with a confused face. But he's been catching on that he's supposed to go and fetch it. Oh, and he is house trained and is good around other dogs. I haven't even heard him bark yet. If there is a dog barking at him, he just sort of whimpers a bit. A very very good dog! I really love this dog and would adopt him in a second if I wasn't moving in September.

The Return Policy

Fasten your seatbelts because rescue is a rollercoster of emotions. The ups keep our spirits going, and the downs are why we have to keep going. You may remember Bonney, our black orphan puppy who generated a huge amount of support and subsequent adoption a few months ago. Bonney was our up, but what goes up must come down. As introduced, Katie, Bonney's sister was returned on the heels of Bonney's adoption.

Katie has replaced her sister in the same foster home and we have an update on her progress. She can be a little shy to start but warms up quickly to dogs, people and children. She is very smart and with treats and positive training she is doing very well walking on leash but does require a bit more work. Katie has been good running off leash and has been having a blast in the field with her temporary Weimaraner sisters. She is a complete tomboy and can play rough with the little dogs so a home with little dogs would not be suitable, but is a great wrestling partner for bigger playmates. Katie sleeps quietly in her crate at night, doesn't generally bark much at all. She loves to be with her people and will crash at your feet after a day of just being a puppy.

The team at PDCR does so much to screen potential applicants. We know it can be frustrating to fill out the seemingly endless paper application, return for visits several times, ensure all family members two and four legged are on board , check references, talk to your landlords. And while it can seem more painful then a tax audit, please know this is why we do it. While we encourage and ensure our dogs are returned if they can no longer be cared for, we strive to prevent it in the first place. It is heartbreaking for us, but more importantly for the dog.

Katie is progressing well and we are all looking forward to closing the chapter on the pirate puppies. Who will discover the last treasure?

Busy Weekend

Well this weekend proved to be very busy in Rescue Land.

Terra & Edie had meetings this weekend with potential home and we are pleased to say both will be off to their new homes this coming week!! Aimee also had a meeting that went well and we are crossing our fingers that she is on her way too.

We took in three new dogs on Friday, Frodo, Twiggy (a golden retriever) and Abby (a beagle/basset hound cross). Abby had a meeting on Saturday and went off to her new new, while Twiggy was adopted by her foster mom after only 2 days!!! Welcome to the Double F (Failed Foster) Club Kathryn!!

Zak has a meeting on Tuesday with his potential home and if all goes well that leaves us with only Katie & Frodo. So look for more updates on these two sweethearts coming soon.....

Frodo

This handsome fella is Frodo. His number was up at an area shelter and so we took him in to help him on the next leg of his journey...to a place he has been in search of for a long time.... a home.

Frodo is approximately 2 years old and is Heinz 57 but for the sake of the computer system are best guesstimate is a Husky Cross. He is not a very big guy but what he lacks in height he makes up for in heart.

As he is new to us we do not know very much about him at the moment but he does know how to sit, does not mind other dogs, loves attention and and is quite content to just hang out. Once he has settled into his foster home we will update you further.

I just wanted to share him with everyone before the weekend because he sure is a special little guy, and has eyes that melt your heart.

Edie

Meet Edie, she is a 4 month old Heinz 57 that we rescue from Cardston a few months ago. She is quite small for her age weighing only about 14 pounds so we do not think she is going to be a very big girl maybe about 30 pounds full grown.

She was found by a couple who were gassing up their vehicle at the Husky station in Cardston. They saw this poor baby and couldn't drive away and found a caring animal lady in Cardston who turned her over to us.

Upon intake of little Edie it was noted that something was wrong with her front legs and further x-rays showed there was defiantly something wrong.

Normally, there would be a 'wrist' bone connecting the toes to the 'fore arm' bone, not the case here. There are 5 or 6 fragments of what should be one bone. This doesn't look like a case of abuse or 'stepping on', just maybe a case of malnutrition or bone deformity. The prognosis from the vet was good, due to her young age there was a strong possibility the bone fragments would fuse together and you would never know she had this problem, or amputation.

She was kept in foster care until it was determined what would need to be done and we are happy to announce that with proper care, nutrition and lots of love, little Miss Edie is doing great. She is walking normally now and there is no need for amputation.

Edie is good with cats, dog and kids and is eagerly awaiting a home of her own.

A Diamond in The Ruff

The phrase is clearly a metaphor for the original unpolished state of diamond gemstones, especially those that have the potential to become high quality jewels.
PDCR has taken Terra from her "unpolished" state and produced a beautiful gem, reinforced by her unique diamond pattern graced so eloquently on the crown of her head.

Terra came into rescue as a scared, shy stray who wouldn't even walk on a shiny surface. With a lot of care, and patience the team at PDCR is seeing the dog Terra was meant to be, the dog she should have been all along, but was forced into hibernation by lack of basic care, food, shelter, love. Emerged now is a happy, silly girl, discovering her inner retriever. Terra loves her people, all sizes, is playing with other dogs and is being respectful in the house.

As with most diamonds in the rough, Terra is passed over, and dismissed. We all know that every dog is worthy of a home, and Terra is certainly no exception she just hasn't found that person who sees her potential. Who wouldn't want this polished gem? - all she needs is a place to be set.

Gorgeous Gwen

This is Gwen and she is the last of Aimee's puppies and she is looking for a home of her own. She's already moved into her foster family's hearts and taken up residence. She is great with kids and other dogs. She loves to snuggle and play with her family. Who can resist a face like this?

Tuff

This handsome gentleman is Tuff, who is a 2 year old Anatolian Shepard.

He was surrendered to us as his owners had to move into the city from an acreage and initially that landlord said it was ok...until they saw how big Tuff was.

So he is now hanging out with a great foster home in the country patiently awaiting a home of his own. This is what his foster mom has to say about him:

He's a gentle giant, well-mannered and steady. He's a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. He's good with other dogs and kids. Actually, my shiba has been bossing him around, which is just hilarious to watch. He doesn't get too bouncy or hyper around the kids, and he doesn't seem fazed by rowdy kids. He likes to pester the cats a bit, but nothing too bad. Over all, he's an all-around gentleman.

Interested in Tuff, please fill out an application and email it to prairiedogcaninerescue@hotmail.com

Zak & Cody

No better way to end a week than with these handsome little devils, we are proud to introduce...

Zak

and Cody (ADOPTED)

Their previous owners found that two puppies were just to much to handle and surrendered them to a local area animal shelter who were glad to take them in. Unfortunately in this town due to their breed they are unable to adopt them out, so we happily took them in to help them on their way to a new life.

Zak & Cody are Pitbull Cross's and approximately 4 months old. Their foster mom has nothing but good things to say about these boys, entertaining, full of kisses, cuddles and simply two very nice dogs to have around.

Zak & Cody are patiently awaiting their furever homes and look forward to a long life filled with cuddles and kisses.

As with all dogs adopted through PDCR their adoption fee includes, vaccinations up to date, neutering when old enough, microchipping and a complimentary 30 days of free pet insurance.

Katie

Meet Katie, does she look familiar??? She sure does because she is Bonney's sister and one the pirate puppies that we had a few months back.

Unfortunately due to no fault of her own, Katie's owners decided that due to some lifestyle changes it was best for Katie to find a new place to call home, so we have taken her back to help her find that special home.

Here is what her foster mom has to say about the sweet girl:

Katie is doing great, she is now learning to sit outside her crate for her meals and when I leave for work. She is sleeping through the night in her crate no problem, and is not destructive or vocal in her crate when I leave for work. Katie is house trained, a good eater & always happy to be rewarded with food. She is smart and wants to learn so is always looking for more to do a busy girl who needs structure and exercise in her life. Katie is great with all dogs but does seem to forget her size and can play a bit too hard with little dogs, we are working on this.

Katie is in a great foster home that is working with her on her manners, walking on a leash, crate training and how to have fun.
