The Life of Brian...the saga continues

Brian is doing awesome. In just a few short days he has had a great recovery. He is playful, sassy, and is a very typical little puppy. Getting these photos was not an easy thing- he is very wiggly and doesn't really understand about staying still.

And here is Brian starring in his first Video :o)

Official Photo Shoot

So Natalie and I wracked our brains- and the internet and came up with these names for the puppies. Believe it or not these are all Beer Brands- found on thebeerstore.ca
The pups are too young to attach any sort of personality traits to but here are their first photos!
Enjoy!
Oh- and we would LOVE it if you'd like to volunteer your time for some feedings, or donations of blankets and formula.

6 additions and Brian Update

So first I have to tell you all that Brian is doing great! The surgery went well and Brian will make a full recovery. He is in quite a lot of pain right now but already is moving around better than before. Yay for Brian!!!

In other news we took in a litter of 4 day old puppies. Natalie is bottle feeding.
We got a call from a rescue that was out in Cardston doing a spay/neuter clinic. They had seen the mom dog try to cross the highway and she was hit and instantly killed. They could tell she had pups so combed the area looking for them. Thankfully they found them.

Without foster homes they too are unable to take in too many dogs so they called and asked if we had space. We don't reallly, but we took them anyway.

There are 6 of them- about 4 days old- their eyes aren't open yet, but they are fat and happy. The mom was doing a good job of raising them so far. Because there are 6 of them, and for those of you who know Natalie know how much she likes her beer. We are dubbing them the 6pack. Individual names to come!

The pups are all different. There are three Golden colored ones, a black and tan, a brindle, and a black and white. They will be med-large sized dogs when they are full grown.

I hope to have photos tomorrow for you guys. In the mean time if anyone is interested in bottle feeding, or just going over to visit Brian I know he'd love visitors!

Mickey- Update Sep26

Mickey is doing great and is ready for a home to call his own. He is a great little pup who is ready to find a family of his own. His foster home reports that he is smart as a whip and is confident, brave and outgoing. Already he thinks he is "the man" and is sure that everyone will adore him.
Mickey has great dog social skills and loves to play and wrestle. He has also been around cats and says that Kids would be right up his alley.
Mickey has already been growing alot and from the looks of those ears they will be up soon enough! He will grow up to be a large dog- around 60-75lbs or so.

He sure has come a long way- from starving and abandoned on the reserve to friendly and happy in just a few short weeks! Thanks so much to his foster home for taking such good care of him!

The Life of Brian- update Sep.25

Brian is doing awesome! He has really, really come a long way. His hair is growing back very fast, and he just has this energy about him. He is a fighter that is for sure. Brian is learning housetraining, and basic manners and is doing great in the crate. He LOVES the kids, and is good with the cats and other dogs. He is just a really, really great little Pup.

Brian's big day is tomorrow. He is going to Calgary for surgery (Femoral Head Removal) We are excited for him- but at the same time are very nervous for him.

Thanks to everyones support we will have just enough money to cover his surgery!
I don't know what we'd do without you all!

Brian says thanks! :o)

Mickey

Mickey is a cute little pup with loads of personality. Already at 7 weeks he is showing just what a great companion he will be- he is catching on to housetraining, adores all people, is confident and outgoing with other dogs, ignores cats, and is doing great in the kennel.
Mickey loves to play (as all puppies do) and will carry around toys, and even fetch kind of. We don't know for sure what he is as he was found abandoned on the reserve. We are guessing he is mostly shepherd and he will have large pointy ears in a few months! The vet guessed his age at around 7 weeks or so. He is fun loving kind of guy and is ready for a home to call his own!

Wicket

Wicket is STILL LOOKING for his forever home!!!!! If you know anyone who is looking for that perfect little companion dog please pass the word Meet Wicket- he is a friendly little dude who loves life, and takes things in stride. He is a one year old Shih Tzu and is just a great little dog.

Wicket is a good boy in the house and is completely housetrained. He likes to cuddle and sit on your lap. He really enjoys going for walks and loves to play out in the yard. Wicket is the kind of dog who is happy doing whatever you are.

He is great with kids- and other dogs. He is learning about cats, and how to respect them.

All in all he is a great dog who is more than ready for his forever home!

Max

Max is all smiles and is a happy go lucky dog. He is quick to make friends and at first glance you probably didn't even realise that he only has three legs.

He has been on three legs for a few years now and it doesn't slow him down at all! He goes 100 miles per hour still and can go up and down stairs, fetch a ball and run at the off leash park. He doesn't know he's supposed to be handicapped!

Max is a terrier/corgi/lab cross. He is about knee height and is the perfect size for a small space. He gets along good with other dogs but is a dominant male so would be best suited to a home with no other dogs or females only. Max is friendly with people but like most herding dogs needs to get to know you before he's comfortable being handled. He is not great with younger kids and only will be adopted out to families with older kids, or those who don't plan on having any.

He is a complete gentleman and has good manners- he doesn't jump up, is completely housetrained and is content to sleep in his crate when you're not home. Max likes to play fetch and is a destroyer of squeaky toys. :o)

Life of Brian...Part Three

If I hadn't been driving, I would have cried!!

Brian is going to be OK!!!!

He will need one surgery, called Femural Head Removal. We had a rescue puppy about two years ago that needed that same operation and her recovery is amazing. His femur is broken and the surgery is basically, going in and removing the top part of the bone that is away from the rest of the leg. He would be left with no bone attaching his femur to his hip. This might sound weird, but, with his pelvis being broken, removing the 'head' of the bone all together it takes the pressure off the pelvis.

With this operation, the hope is that we wouldn't have to do anything, surgically, with the broken pelvis. Pelvis breaks can't be fixed, the dog only needs cage rest while the bones fuse together again. Brian's pelvis has already fused together and it wouldn't make sense to put him thru the re-breaking procedure just to wait for his body to fuse everything together again.

So, I made a call to my most favorite vet in the world, no offense to Kendra and Patrick, but Marco is amazing! He was the original 'rescue' vet that I used over 6 years ago. (He also, almost, had to deliver my first born at his clinic, but thats a different story!) Career advancement moved him to Calgary where he has done alot of orthopedic procedures and is always willing to help 'my dogs.' Brian's appointment for his surgery is next Friday!!

Kendra, sorry - Dr. Kremeniuk, is wanting to watch and hopefully assist the surgery, so she is willing to take him up and be with him during the procedure.

Recovery should be good. I fostered the last puppy that had the procedure and we just had to keep her confined for a couple of weeks after, until the muscles were ready to start holding the pelvis and lower part of the femur together. Then slow walks, worse thing for a puppy!, and a careful diet into adulthood is key. Dogs that get this surgery must be kept thin, in order to not have unnecessary weight on the back end.

So thats it! Good news all around, Better news is the Marco, sorry - Dr. Bregliano, is giving us a deal on the surgery that won't bankrupt us completely, close, but not all the way! I am looking forward to the surgery day for him and to see him shine. I am going to video him playing around the house and post it soon for you all to see his progress. The amount of hair that has grown back is amazing, he now has a cute little white spot of hair growing on his chest. Its my favorite spot on him right now.

Thanks to all that have donated toward him so far and for those that are wanting to, it is so appreciated from all of us involved in the rescue. If anyone wants to come see Brian, I am home most days and I know he would love it. ~Natalie~

Zoe

Her dad was a Shepherd Cross, and her mom was a Jack Russell Terrier Cross...pretty interesting eh?

You wouldn't think something this cute could come from that mix- but let me tell you Zoe is pretty darn cute!

Zoe is a great little dog- she is housetrained and good in the crate. She is well behaved in the house and likes to cuddle.

She is an active little thing- who likes to play fetch. She loves to go for walks- although she needs some training on the leash.

Zoe would be a great addition to any family- and would love to cuddle on the couch or run in the coulees. She is an outgoing dog- who likes attention and pets.

in the wings..

Natalie and I were just saying the other day how nice it was to have not very many dogs....

Shasta

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 18TH. Shasta is indeed pregnant- and a few weeks too far along to spay/abort. So in approximately two or three weeks she will be having pups- the xray showed 4-6, but that could change- hopefully 4. :o) and not all black....
If you looked up Wiggly in the dictionary you would see Shasta's picture. She is full of wiggles, and is just a very sweet little dog. Shasta is a lab cross but is smaller than you would think. She is just over knee height and around 35lbs.

Shasta wandered into Cardston off the reserve and was picked up by the shelter. She stayed at the shelter- unclaimed and starving for attention until her last day. And then we saved her.

She appears to be around 9 months old- and is either pregnant or had puppies recently. We will know for sure this afternoon. She has lots of old war wounds- both phyisically and mentally- some that have healed, and others that are just starting to. Shasta loves people but is pitifully shy about it- she presses herself to the ground and crawls on her belly to you. It is heart breaking.

Already in just a few days she is coming around though- she has gotten used to a collar. But still is very worried when she feels a leash attached. Her foster home reports that she is good in the house- asking to go outside. She likes to cuddle- and sadly has no idea about toys. Her foster dog brother and sister are working on teaching her though! I am sure she will learn in no time the wonderful joy of having a family who loves you!

If Shasta is pregnant and is too far along to spay she won't be for adoption until after the pups are weaned. We will be taking applications on her though! Stay tuned for more updates!

Spike

Spike is still looking for his forever home!!!!but I thought I'd share his pictures with you all anyway. He's a pretty handsome dude!

Midge

Midge has been adopted already! Thanks for the interest though!
Meet Midge, isn't she cute?

Midge was on her last day at an area shelter and we couldn't leave her. She is a Chihuahua cross and is a great little dog- happy, outgoing, and snuggly. Midge is fully housetrained and is very easy to live with. She likes to snuggle on the couch, and is just a good little girl. She gets along great with other dogs- and isn't intimidated by even the big ones.

She is eager to please and loves cookies. She is very smart, and really is catching on quick at her foster home. We are guessing her to be around 8 years old- which isn't old for a Chihuahua! She has lots of thick, long hair but a quick brush once a week will keep her looking great. Her nails were a bit overgrown but she doesn't mind them being trimmed. Midge has a vet appointment for a teeth cleaning and then will be ready for adoption.

This little girl won't be around for long!

Dax is heading off to his new home tomorrow- after a week of arranging transport up to Edmonton the plan is that he will head out tomorrow morning! I am so excited for him.

Piper had a day visit with her potential adopter today- and from the sounds of things the visit went well. Keep your fingers crossed for her!

And- Eddie...is on an overnight visit! Already! Can you believe it.....his potential new home is perfect, and if all goes well tonite I am sure it will be finalised in the next few days...

Oh- and Spike- who hasn't even made the blog got a great application on him- so hopefully he'll be heading out to his permanent home in the next few days. Spike is a giant Rottweiler who's owner moved over seas and hasn't returned!

A Poem

Someone forwarded me this today and I thought I'd share it here. It has a good message.

I adopted your dog today
The one you left at the pound
The one you had for seven years
and no longer wanted around.

I adopted your dog today
Do you know he's lost weight?
Do you know he's scared and depressed
and has lost all faith?

I adopted your dog today.
he had fleas and a cold,
but don't worry none.
You've unburdened your load.

I adopted your dog today.
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies or was there no reason he couldn't
stay?

I adopted your dog today.
he doesn't play or eat much
He's very depressed, but
he will learn again to trust.

I adopted your dog today.
And here he will stay.
He's found his forever home
and a warm bed on which to lay.

I adopted your dog today.
And I will give him all that he could need.
Patience, love, security, and understanding.
Hopefully he will forget your selfish deed.

Life of Brian...continued

So we got the x-rays today. It doesn't look good for poor Brian.

Apparently his life has been worse than we thought.

It appears that he was stepped on and actually squished when he was young- very young. Can you imagine? How someone could do that to a puppy is beyond me.

Almost every bone in his pelvis area is in the wrong spot, rotated or crushed.
This dog has been in excruciating amounts of pain- and will remain so unless we fix it.

You can see from the xrays that everything appears crooked. That's because it is!
This bone is rotated the wrong way

Here are his hip bones- not where they are supposed to be at all.

Poor Guy.

So- we are sending the xrays to a specialist in Calgary.
And hopefully there will be some affordable options for him.
He is a great little pup but without surgery we will be forced to euthanise him.
We'll keep you posted.
In the mean time we will be focusing on doing some fundraising-
our bank account won't be able to afford much at all.

Opal and Onyx

Opal and Onyx are 1.5 year old Golden Retriever/Lab crosses. They are littermates and have not had a very good life. The two of them were your typical "farm dogs." Even at such a young age Opal has had TWO litter of puppies. They have lived exclusively outdoors and have had little human attention. Despite this they are great dogs and I have a feeling they will come around quickly!
Opal is much smaller than her brother- weighing around 50lbs or so. She is very petite and has a soft personality. She is quite submissive and wants to make you happy. She is very wiggly and ADORES people- she's just not quite sure what to do when she gets the attention!
---------
Onyx is a handsome brute with a classic blocky golden head. He is quite a good looking dog! He is all muscle and weighs about 60 lbs. He stands about 21 inches tall. He is happy fellow who is a typical retriever- all tongue and tail! He loves to give kisses and is a confident guy.
Opal and Onyx are very attached to one another- and when they are seperated it will be quite an adjustment for them- but they will be okay and will be better off in the long run! They are doing well learning house rules and so far have not had an accident. They are good with other dogs and like kids. They will both need time to learn how to be good dogs- and an obedience class is in their near future! Right now they are learning that people are good things and that there will never be a shortage of attention again!
